Environment

This should not, of course, be taken too literally. I can live in an arctic environment just as well as I can a desert , or a tropical rain forest. What the author means, of course, is that the attitudes we have determine how we feel. My thoughts and beliefs may change over time as I learn and grow, but while they may change, it does not mean that they have to change me. I am the one who determines my attitude. I am reminded of a story I once heard of two men helping to build a cathedral in the Middle Ages. When a bystander asked what each was doing, one replied that he was digging holes, while the other said he was building a cathedral where he would be able to worship God. The were both in the same situation, and working at the same job, but the environment of the one was severely limited.
