A goal is a commitment to do something. It matters little what that goal is, in a sense, because you are unlikely to make a goal to do something that is completely beyond your abilities. And you may reach a long-term goal by setting a number of short-term goals in the interim. But the setting a goal in and of itself has a cathartic effect. I am not going to set a goal that I know I cannot reach, but the action itself generates hope that it is something that I can do. That is what it does for me, but for others, keeping to my goals or commitments generates trust and allows them to see that I can be trusted.
