We have all heard of the seven deadly sins, although likely not in relation to Family History. In no particular order they are: lust, greed, wrath, pride, gluttony, sloth, and envy. And in relation to genealogy, here is what they are (IMHO): Lust. “I’ll share with you, but only if you share with me.” “I… Continue reading The 7 Deadly Sins of Genealogy

Patriotism
“Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,Who never to himself hath said,This is my own, my native land!Whose heart hath ne’er within him burn’d,As home his footsteps he hath turn’d,From wandering on a foreign strand!” Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) from ‘The Lay of the Last Minstrel’ Reflection: Although written about Scotland, these sentiments surely strike… Continue reading Patriotism
Tranquility
“Write your injuries in dust, your benefits in marble.” Author: Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) from Poor Richard’s Almanack Reflection: Personal slights – or worse – need only be temporary. Accessing Parish Records – Genealogy Sites
Many parish records are available online, and the best places to look for them are Ancestry, Find My Past, and My Heritage. There’s FamilySearch as well, but I will cover that in the next post. Just bear in mind that there is no simple way to work out where the records you are looking for… Continue reading Accessing Parish Records – Genealogy Sites
Availability of parish records
Today, I will attempt to give a synopsis of why parish records may have been lost, and also where you may be able to locate those that have survived. For some details, I am indebted to the book Tracing Your Georgian Ancestors 1714-1837 by John Wintrip. I did say I would explain where you might… Continue reading Availability of parish records
